So I'm reading 1984 by George Orwell. I'm about a third of the way through it and it is definitely captivating. I chose the novel because I figured it would be easy to write an essay about the theme of it. But there's a lot more to the story-line than I would have thought. I'm not sure where all of it is headed at the moment, but I really want to find out. At the moment, it really reminds me of F451, but I guess I'll see if that trend continues or not. My goal is to finish the book and start my essay over break.

I agree a lot with the idea that it can be related to F451. There are a lot of similarities in it. The main characters both rebel against their societies. Both societies have over controlling governments that attempt to alter history but it different ways. The whole theme of manipulation is greater than I expected and towards the end of the book becomes an even bigger part. It amuses me how in depth the book goes and how crazy some of the ideas are in it.

I agree there is much more to the story-line than I originally thought there would be. The book also reminds me of "F451" for the plot and the main character. "1984" also reminds me of "The Hunger Games." The government in "1984" is a lot like the capitol in "The Hunger Games" because they are both controlling and power hungry. Lastly, both Winston and Katniss are rebellious.

I am reading The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. It is a very quick read, but it seems like there really isn't much plot! I wish that Kafka would explain why Gregor turned into a bug, but I think he wanted to leave that up to the reader to decide. I am definitely seeing a theme of alienation throughout the book. I have read two of the three chapters so far. I feel as if Gregor's emotional problems are far worse than those that are physical. Everyone looks at him differently (obviously), so he has hardly any human interaction.

Well it is a little late for this, but my second quarter book is the play, Death of a Salesman by Art Miller. It is a quick and fairly easy read. My initial reaction was that the flashbacks within the play were hard to follow, but that the play was enjoyable. Several major themes presented themselves without having to dig very deep into thought.

So my second quarter book that I chose was the novel 1984. I do not think that it is a bad story, but when some of the people in the class were talking about how great it was at the beginning of the year I expected a lot more excitement out of it. It wasn't terrible, it was just a little uneventful until like the last one hundred pages. It was still an interesting read though.

I am reading Metamorphosis. I think it is really easy to get into, of course, it is a very quick read, but I do not find it to be boring like many of the books I have read. I am a little concerned about getting a whole essay out of it, however I know it can be done. I do still have to finish the story.

I am read 1984. I think everyone talking about the book and how great it was raised my expectations too high. I expected it to really good but it turned out to be just alright. It is not a bad story, it just didn't meet my expectations. The concept of the story is good but I think Orwell could have made it better. I feel like he could have done something more with the message of control and rising against the miserable control, which I think will be the theme I write about.

That is how I felt about the book also. However, I did enjoy the last 100 pages as more happened. The ending did catch me by surprise because not to often books end in that way. Actually, the more I think about it, I did enjoy the book and the message of it kind of creeps me out. I think I originally thought it was going to be an irrelevant story because 1984 happened a long time ago but now I see that something along the line of the Party could still happen today.

The book that I am reading this semester is My Antonia, and my first thought with reading this book was that the guy who is telling the story has the best memory that I have ever heard of, due to how he can remember things in such detail from when he was younger than twelve. Also that the time period and where he lived was very interesting, along with the history of some of the characters. Also it is very hard to tell what the theme presented may be but I am sure when I get to the end of the book one will present itself.

Brave New World is a great read. I am someone who does not enjoy reading that much, but this book made my quarter project not very hard. I was very interested in the book the whole way though. It is a very interesting depiction of the future. I also had no problem writing about it, for the theme is very large.
