I am reading Pride and Prejudice. So far I am only on chapter 5. I enjoy the story so far, but I am not very far into it so who knows if my opinion will stay that way. It is a little hard to follow with the writing style. Therefore, I find myself reading and re-reading pages that I do not understand. This is a bit frustrating but makes me understand the story so much more.

I am reading The Picture Of Dorian Gray for my first quarter book. So far I have read the first few chapters, and I have enjoyed the novel to this point. I have liked the way that Oscar Wilde has introduced the characters and they quarrel with each other over certain matters that really have no importance. Of course Dorian Gray's innocence and youth is hard to hate.

I decided to read The House of Seven Gables. I'm about a fourth of the way through and I can't decide what to make of it. The first chapter was phenomenal. It gave a history of the house and was full of action and death and ominous curses and stuff. I was rather surprised, considering it was a Hawthorne book and all, so I didn't expect so much to happen so fast. But unfortunately, the story slowed down drastically since then and it is taking a fair amount of effort to keep myself focused on reading it. Yet, I can understand what's going on, which is nice because I was worried about getting lost in Hawthorne's elaborate language.

For my first quarter book I chose to read The Turn of the Screw. I am just over halfway through the book, and I do not really know what to think about it. This book is an allegory. A group of people are reading the diary of a young governess who was taking care of two children, and a bunch of weird things happen while she is living with them. It isn't a terrible story, but I don't really like the governess. She just comes off as stupid to me. It does take me a while to read because I lose focus a lot and then have to go back and re-read some pages.

I just finished reading Pride and Prejudice. It seemed like a very long read because there where parts where I got extremely bored and I had a difficult time staying focused. I really like Elizabeth and Jane Bennet. They remind me of my sister and I due to the fact that they are always looking after each other and they tell each other all of their secrets. Mrs. Bennet on the other hand...OOFTA. I am not a fan of her!

I am reading The Picture of Dorian Gray. I am on my last four chapters of the book and really enjoy it so far. The whole book seems to be a lesson is philosophy. All the characters seem to have a deep understanding of how humans think and project their ideas in an intelligent manor. I think some people wouldn't like this about a book, it is different, but I really like it so far! I especially enjoy the character of Lord Henry. He is filled with knowledge and has a unique view on people and life. The plot for the most part isn't incredibly exciting until his portrait starts to change but because of Wilde's writing the story is compelling. I would definitely recommend this book!

I ended up switching books to The Turn of the Screw. It was a nice quick read, but it was pretty uneventful. While it was supposed to be a scary story, not much happened. The main character, the governess, seems a bit stupid and relies on her housekeeper quite a bit for help and calming. The kids in the story are also very odd. All that is really said about their personalities is how adorable they are and how tormented they may be. Its overall a really weird plot.

So I started off reading Huck Finn, but decided the book wasn't for me. Instead I read The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. This book was a quick read and was actually not too bad. I liked the plot because it was strange but also interesting. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the characters. The governess and the children were my three least favorite characters. The governess seemed like a needy teenage girl who longed for being heroic, and the kids were way too "angelic" for my liking.

The Picture of Dorian Gray was an alright book. I like that it isn't a book about a hero, because that's totally overdone. Dorian Gray is not a good person, and neither is his friend, Lord Henry.

I am reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. So far I am done with three of the six questions on the report. I really enjoyed the story, and as always, find the colloquialism entertaining. It was a quick read and would recommend it to others. I also enjoyed it because it was related to the history of our country, so if you are into that thing it makes it that much better. Some advice for next quarter, and also a note to self, DO NOT save the report for the last week of the quarter!

For my quarter book I read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I surprisingly really enjoyed the book because it was obviously full of adventure but also had some humor in it that made it even more entertaining. It was nice not to read some screwed up love story for once and enjoy a book about friendship instead. Huck and Tom are also hilarious because they come up with the weirdest plans to capture robbers and set Jim free, that you can't help but laugh because they are just silly boys.
