Okay, what is the deal with Lady Macbeth praying away her femininity and calling upon the powers of darkness? Anyone see some negative consequences on the way for this loony toon? Or is she not crazy at all? Could we simply describe her as someone who really (like REALLY) wants to achieve her goals in life, consequences be damned? Could her "I'll do whatever it takes" mentality be admirable, or is it plain old dumb?

Lady Macbeth calls upon the powers of darkness to insinuate the evil within her to kill, or have the mental capacity to feel no remorse for the death that will occur. I think that there will be negative consiqences as in carama, but so far it is unpredictable what it may be. She is crazy, however she does really really want to achieve her goals, but a mental sane person would not harm others by death to make those goals reality. It is admirable that she has the mind set that she will do whatever she can to have her goal become reality, but it is dumb to kill people in the process. It is also admirable that when she says she will do something, she will do it just like any real man would.

By calling out to the darkness, or witches, Lady Macbeth is hoping that some of their evil traits might be cast upon her. She is basically asking them to make her evil, so that she has the power to kill King Duncan.

Lady Macbeth is straight crazy. I can see karma playing a role in the story. I think that because she is going to kill those people, her and Macbeth's actions will catch up with them and they will be killed. Her whatever it takes mentality is dumb. They already have a castle and seem pretty well off. She should be happy in her current state and should support Macbeth becoming a King by not killing people.

You make a good point. Lady MB and MB already have honor due to MB's triumphs as a war hero, so why continue to push it further?

I think that by praying away her femininity, Lady Macbeth feels as if it will be easier to commit the vicious murder of King Duncan. By doing anything, even committing murder, just to achieve her goals, she is going to find herself having severe consequences. I believe that her mentality to do whatever it takes for her husband to become king is just plain dumb. If people find out that it is she who killed the King Duncan, Macbeth will probably not be able to become king and she will go to prison, or even worse, be executed.

I don't think Lady Macbeth is necessarily insane, at least at where we are in the play so far. If anything, she's just someone who is willing to do anything to meet her goals and is totally willing to throw away her gender stereotype. In a way, that's pretty respectable, since most people lack that kind of ambition. Then again, I've always liked power hungry characters in things that are willing to do anything to reach their endgame.

I think it is just dumb. Lady Macbeth is kind of just a nut job and obviously has some issues. Like I get that some people go drastic measures for things they want but this is a little overboard. And what makes it all a little more weird and crazy is the fact that she wishes away her femininity and the other things she says. I'm all about achieving goals, but sometimes there's a line that you don't cross.

Lady Macbeth needs to get herself straight and start acting like a lady, rather than swearing off her femininity. She is super nuts to do what she did in calling out to the spirits. There could be some serious consequences for her because karma could get her and she could get blamed for the murders.

I think that while Lady Macbeth isn't a "normal" person, she is far from crazy. She's just very passionate about getting what she wants. If she was this passionate about something less selfish, would she be labeled as crazy? Being a very selfish person does not make you insane.

True, but I'm wondering where you then stand on her invoking spirits to remove her feminine qualities. She seems pretty serious about that-- does that tip the balance from selfish to something more? Or is it just further evidence of her ambition and selfishness?

But the thing is, the spirits actually exist in this play. She's not talking out of madness, but out of poorly thought out plans.

Lady MacBeth is crazy for wanting to kill a man but is it crazy that she is doing whatever it takes for her to succeed? And lets look at the steps she is planning out to succeed. Now I personally wouldn't be able to kill someone but lets look at what exactly Lady MacBeth is doing. She has a high drive to achieve greatness. Everyone wants greatness but most are too lazy or feeble to actually do what it takes! At this era women are not taken seriously and are objectified under their husbands. Not Lady MacBeth! She is taking all control over this situation. She is showing her intelligence in the most obscene way possible but I love it. She is doing it to benefit herself and maybe a little bit to benefit her husband (but mainly herself). I'm not saying everyone should go his people to benefit themselves but let's appreciate what Lady MacBeth is doing. You go girl!

I think that Lady Macbeth is just really passionate about getting what she wants. Her goal is very big as well, she needs to do a lot to get achieve it. She is showing that she is a strong, independent woman and is taking control of her life. She is not necessarily a normal person, but power changes you. But she is also not crazy. She is just passionate for power.

But she did go crazy later in the play, what with all the sleepwalking and such. So she must have had the capacity for insanity that even in the beginning, right? I think Lady Macbeth's main issue is that she doesn't look at the long term effects of her actions. She didn't even consider how much guilt she would end up experiencing. Lady M needs to stop doing things because they would make her happy in the moment and start thinking about the future. She wasn't crazy when she decided that killing Duncan was a good idea, but I don't think she was completely sound of mind either.

I do not believe "crazy" should be used to describe Lady Macbeth. She is wild and aggressive, similar to a person with qualities of being crazy, but she is not mentally deranged. Rather, Lady Macbeth is quite intelligent. She is able to plot a murder and persuade her heroic and genuinely kind husband to do the dirty work for her. All the while, she successfully convinces the numerous guests in her house that she is innocent and sorrowful towards the death of the king. She is truly able to look like an innocent flower on the outside but be a serpent under it.

Well-said, Jack. Really, Lady MB is an impressive individual in all that she is capable of accomplishing.

Lady Macbeth has absolutely no conviction. She presses her husband to murder his own king for her personal gain, and she is unable to live with the guilt. She obviously had tunnel vision once she learned of the prophecy, and neglected to think of the consequences of murder. She may seem focused and driven towards her goals, but she is really just a short-sighted lunatic with no stomach for violence.
